The Cyber1000 cybersecurity emergency response team is part of the CyberSecurity Malaysia agency in the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia of Malaysia. At the Standoff cyberbattle, the team successfully protected the IT systems of the City Housing and Utilities and State Services Department.
Cyber1000 analysts deal with thousands of attacks every year, so it's important for the team to regularly improve its skills and always be prepared to counter cyberthreats of any complexity. The Standoff cyberbattle was an excellent opportunity for Cyber1000 members to test their teamwork and skills, as well as improve how prepared they are to counter real threats. The Standoff cyberrange recreates the IT infrastructure of a virtual state, including government bodies and enterprises from the energy, industrial, and other sectors to give defense teams invaluable practical experience.
Before the cyberbattle, Positive Technologies provided the team with a mentor and detailed information about the protected hosts and services in the cyberrange. Analysts on the Cyber1000 team protected information systems responsible for the operation of housing and utility services and the provision of state services. After Standoff, CyberSecurity Malaysia specialists managed to identify a number of critical security incidents and investigate several cyberattacks.
"The city infrastructure was incredibly detailed and realistic, which made our experience in the cyberbattle even more exciting. Besides helping us become better defenders, we also had the chance to learn from and network with industry leaders from other countries. This is definitely an event that every company prioritizing their own security and the security of their customers should join," shared Nur Qurratu Aini Rohizan, Analyst at CyberSecurity Malaysia.
As digitalization continues, the number of threats increases every year, and attackers are constantly improving their techniques. To stay ahead, it's impossible to prepare an effective defense team without training on a realistic IT infrastructure. The Standoff cyberrange gives companies the chance to test the skills of their analysts and improve the security of their own information assets and clients.
The Standoff cyberbattle is one of the biggest and most prominent events in the industry. Over eight years, a total of 14 cyberexercises have involved more than 4,500 cybersecurity experts. In addition to offline cyberbattles, defense teams can join the online Standoff cyberrange to continue investigating attacks and debugging information security processes in a less intense format.
