Positive Hack Talks in Kuala Lumpur: Positive Technologies' international meetup series returns to Southeast Asia

Positive Technologies, an industry leader in results-driven cybersecurity, hosted an open event for cybersecurity professionals in Malaysia. The meetup brought together local, Russian, and international experts who shared their practical knowledge and unique experience. These events are open to all cybersecurity enthusiasts—from students and beginners to seasoned pros who are eager to share their insights.

Malaysia is one of the regional leaders in digital technology. According to Statista, the country boasts the highest internet penetration rate in the region at 97%, surpassing Singapore. However, this rapid digitalization comes with risks: Positive Technologies experts estimate that Malaysia ranks sixth in Southeast Asia for cyberattacks, accounting for 10% of the region's total.

Malaysia ranked fourth in the number of advertisements on dark web forums (15%), just slightly behind Vietnam. The large number of advertisements related to Malaysia stems from the country's consistently high rate of data breaches, with cybercriminals exploiting these incidents to sell stolen data on the dark web for financial gain. According to Dutch cybersecurity company Surfshark, 152 accounts are breached per 100 people on average in Malaysia, which is significantly higher than the regional average of 55 per 100. Surfshark ranked Malaysia fourth in Southeast Asia and 31st globally in terms of the number of compromised accounts.

The Malaysian government has highlighted a shortage of qualified cybersecurity professionals in the region and is planning to introduce several initiatives to develop talent in the field and attract international experts to the country.

"The Kuala Lumpur meetup is another step toward building a truly global and collaborative community of cybersecurity experts. We have accumulated substantial expertise and are eager to share it, helping professionals across different countries grow so that together we can combat escalating cyberthreats. Our mission is to pool the knowledge and efforts of our peers to elevate global security standards, and Southeast Asia is becoming a key focal point in this endeavor."

At the Positive Hack Talks in Kuala Lumpur, speakers delved into critical cybersecurity topics, including AI-assisted vulnerability research, malware analysis, the security of email-driven systems, and new frameworks for preventing phishing attacks. Alexander Popov presented his open-source kernel-hack-drill project for Linux kernel developers, while Akshay Jain discussed the reverse engineering of Android RASP. The event provided attendees with valuable insights and excellent networking opportunities.

Positive Technologies launched its international meetup series in 2024, hosting open cybersecurity events in Bengaluru (India) and Hanoi (Vietnam). In 2025, the series expanded to include events in Jakarta (Indonesia), São Paulo (Brazil), and Cairo (Egypt).
